Talking to Aaron Chen of Fisk Comedy Series Fame

Aaron Chen Comedian

Its been quite some time since we've talked to someone whose answers are as entertaining as the show they've starred in. Aaron Chen is an Australian comedian who plays the role of a quirky probate clerk on the hilarious Comedy series Fisk now on Netflix.

I also take great pleasure in putting out a disclaimer so that readers don't mistake some of Chen's answers for his opinion instead of the deadpan jokes they are!

Disclaimer: Aaron Chen is a hilarious comedian who in true form has answered interview questions from themoviejunkie.com with a lot of humor. So we suggest you discern opinion from laugh out loud jokes that are delivered in a deadpan manner in Chen's answers to our questions.

1. How did you get cast as the 'Webmaster' and probate Clerk on Fisk?

Kitty sent me a script to audition with and I sent one in when I was travelling in Los Angeles via video email.

2. The main cast are mostly stand up Comedians or presenters. Was this intentional? How much of the show was improv?

I believe this to be intentional you have to ask kitty. But she’s a stand up comedian and loves to work with stand up comedians because they are funny. Most of the show was written and written really nice, it’s tight but there is room to improv at the end of the scene.

3. Kitty Flanagan steals the show as the maladjusted adult who crawls into the relatively peaceful field of Wills and Probate. How was it working with her?

It was amazing. She’s the best so funny and good at running the show.

3a. Marty Sheargold as Ray Gruber is comedy gold. Who was the one who led to the most off screen laughs? My moneys on Marty. Also who broke the most while filming?

Everyone had their time in the sun I like to think. But Marty is always cheeky and always funny and cracks the crew up. He is always finding a way to do things a little kooky and I certainly found it hard not to laugh doing scenes with him.

4. Whats the lawyer scene in Melbourne and Sydney currently? Are they mostly ethical or are they as hated as they are around the world?

I have no clue. I’ve only ever talked to one lawyer in a professional context, it was over the phone. I still maintain my innocence.

4a. Was there any real research done about the legal profession for this show considering it mostly revolves around the topic?

Kitty and Penny talked to Lawyers I’m sure. I didn’t really, I learned the lines and said it with as much gusto as I could muster.

5. What was the most challenging aspect of playing George? Your deadpan delivery was brilliant. Except when you broke once in the B roll.

Most challenging was getting into those tight pants after lunch time

5a. Did you have to prepare for being George? All three of you in the law firm have equal screen time and are equally funny. Was the screentime split intentionally made to be equal ( except Flanagan of course )

There’s a lot that goes into that including scripting, scheduling and other.

6. Do Australians really find the New Zealand ers accent amusing as shown in one of the episodes? I sometimes find it similar to the British accent.

It cracks us up to no end. Sometimes if I want a laugh I call up my kiwi friend Guy Montgomery and just ask how he’s been.

7. Was there a Gruber & Gruber WhatsApp group? How was the camaraderie on set?

We had a text message thread. I will send anyone screenshots for $500. Lots of camaraderie on set, this is a really fun cast and crew.

8. The look for each character seemed to be well thought out to evoke a sense a amusement that is addressed often in the show. How much of the cast got a say in deciding their look?

They always asked us but the directors and costume team are so good you just trust them.

9. Do Roz and Ray have a parental relationship dynamic with George? Considering Helen was called a disobedient labrador by Ray for claiming couch access ( hilarious btw ) but for George it was " all the time "

I think they’re kind of a twisted family, I don’t know too much about the dynamics but they are really nice to George that’s for sure.

10. Is the Australian sense of humor similar to Dry British wit except landing way harder?

Landing way harder is it. I guess there is similar dna, and American humor too. I hope one day Indian humour makes its way into the lexicon. These guys are funny as hell, I like Anirban Dasgupta.

11. How big is Crocodile Dundee in Australia and could you speak to it's cultural relevance?

We all carry around big knives. Croc Dundee is not talked about too much in day to day life anymore, these days we probably talk more about  new shows like The Project.
