The Invite had a lot of positive buzz around its release, and considering the severe dearth of acceptable ( let alone good ) movies out in the theatres, it was a sight for sore eyes. I went in with no expectations, and it blew me away with how good it was.
The movie theater had all of its good seating packed, with most of the four front rows having just a few people. This might mean people had been waiting for this movie to be released and made sure to reserve their seats well in advance, and made sure to be seated on time.
With all these green flags, my expectations about this movie shot up, and the movie did not let me down!

What is The Invite (2026) About?

The Invite follows the interaction between two couples who live as neighbours in the same building. When one couple invites the other over for dinner, you see the hosting couple hash out their marriage in front of the other couple. This brings forth the simmering discontent and dissatisfaction with their marital union to the surface, leading them to decide how things will play out for the rest of their lives.
The Cast of The Invite makes it Awesome

Olivia Wilde's manic energy is infectious to the extent that you absorb her body language for a while. Seth Rogen plays the husband of the manic woman, and Ed Norton plays a douche bag, while Penelope Cruz plays Pena, an exotic Spanish woman whose profession is surprising to say the least, considering her relationship with Hawk.
Wilde is a really good actor, and now I know she's a pretty awesome director as well! She is going through a lot of emotions in this movie ( I'm talking per second here ), and all of it comes across clearly on screen. As a director, she has a few great movies under her belt, from the teen comedy Booksmart (2019) to the psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling (2022) and a few other notable projects along the way.
The Invite will be a landmark film for Wilde, with her probably winning a Golden Globe and an Oscar either for directing, acting, or screenplay.
Seth Rogen seems to be in every movie and series I watch these days, from his role on the Apple TV series Platonic to his cameo on The Boys S5 to his role in Good Fortune with Keanu Reeves. The Norton and Cruz couple is an adventurous and open-minded couple compared to the Rogen and Wilde duo. The movie starts with Rogen and Wilde welcoming their noisy neighbors to a dinner after a long period of speculation. When the two couples meet, it turns into an explosive situation that starts with an awkward introduction and just keeps escalating from there.

There are moments of reality that are well placed in The Invite (2026), dealing with sadness, introspection, and quiet acceptance. The cinematography has a great use of leading lines, exaggerated lighting in places for comedic effect, and clearly distinguishes between regions of their apartment with different levels of lighting, all adding to the atmosphere of the scene.
The visual tones of the movie are muted, probably to indicate the period of austerity in the host couple's relationship that might continue indefinitely.
There is a significant portion of the movie that made me cry laughing, and when I stopped, the audience member behind me was more than happy to begin laughing all over again. It was delightful!
Wrapping Up
If you are in a relationship, married, or have ever been married to someone, then this movie is for you! This movie is also a great watch if you are into good cinema in general. Watch It!
