Safety - Disney+ Original Movie Review of a Biopic

Updated: Jan 8

They say it takes a village to raise a child but in Safety movie it takes an entire football team. The new biopic streaming on Disney+ revolves around Ray McElrathbey and his younger brother Fahmarr. Based on a true story, Ray McElrathbey was a college football player from Clemson University.

He made headlines all over the nation when he stepped in to raise his younger brother, Fahmarr, all while attending classes and football practice. Movies about sports can be one of the best pick-me-ups around, and Safety is the feel-good movie we all needed this year. With his entire team behind him, Ray is able to pull off the unimaginable when handed a difficult situation.

Ray and Fahmarr

Plot of Safety Movie

College football is already an intense, exhausting activity for young college students that make the game possible. There are endless practices, demanding coaches, NCAA compliance restrictions, and a full-time class schedule.

Sometimes life throws us a curveball and adds even more to our plate. Safety is about a college athlete named Ray McElrathbey who receives a scholarship to Clemson University to play for their football team.

The movie opens with Ray moving into his dorm room and meeting his roommate, and fellow teammate Daniel. Ray barely settles into a routine when he has to return home to Atlanta where his mother has been arrested for drug possession. We couldn’t blame Ray if he let his younger brother, Fahmarr, go to foster care while his mother was in a 30-day rehab program. However, he couldn’t let that happen.

Feel-Good to the core

Ray decides the best decision is to take Fahmarr back to campus and hide him for 30 days. With the help of his roommate Daniel and a few other members of their team, they are able to keep Fahmarr from being spotted. That is, until the last day of their mother’s 30-day treatment when Ray is forced to tell his coaches about Fahmarr.

Throughout the second half of this movie, we see the dedication of an older brother who refuses to let his younger brother become part of the system. A community that takes it upon itself to help two young men when they need it the most.

The ups and downs of trying to appeal to an organization that gives no special treatment to any player. This movie will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish.

Should You Watch It- Yes

If you are a fan of feel-good movies, I would definitely give Safety a watch. It shows just how far we are willing to go for the people that matter to us in our lives. It’s a great movie for kids as well, and who doesn’t love family movie night?
