How to Make a KPop Demon Hunters Rumi Costume: A DIY Guide
My kid has watched KPop Demon Hunters enough times that I could probably lip-sync "How It's Done" at this point, and there was never really a question of who she wanted to be for Halloween.
Rumi runs HUNTR/X, she gets the big opening number, and her outfit (cropped yellow jacket, spiked shoulder, a purple braid down to her waist) is one of those costumes that looks harder to pull off than it actually is.
I looked at a stack of other DIY attempts before starting this one: sewing patterns, no-sew hacks, thrifted builds, even the retail licensed costumes to see what they were charging for. Here's what actually works, piece by piece.
What Rumi in KPop Demon Hunters Actually Wears
Worth nailing down before you start cutting felt. Rumi's look comes from the "How It's Done" performance in the opening sequence, and it breaks down into a handful of pieces:
● A bright yellow cropped moto jacket, usually with some graphic detail on it
● A black spiked or studded shoulder pad on the left shoulder
● A white mock-neck crop top underneath
● High-waisted black shorts
● A few layered silver or gold necklaces
● A long purple braid
● Platform boots

Test any fabric paint or adhesive on a scrap piece first. Polar fleece in particular doesn't always take tape the way cotton does. If you're doing a group costume, pair it with Mira and Zoey and the whole thing reads better as a trio than it does solo.
And don't overload it with details just because you can; a jacket with the shoulder spike and a good purple braid looks more finished than one with twenty small extras fighting for attention.

Step 1: The Rumi Yellow Jacket
This is where I'd spend most of your time and budget. Three routes, depending on how much patience you've got. The Rumi yellow jacket is the main piece of this costume.
Thrift it. Fastest option by a mile. Any cropped yellow bomber, moto, or biker jacket from the thrift store or a resale app should work. You're not looking for an exact match on the cut, just color and cropped silhouette. From across a room, that's enough.
Sew it. If you've got a machine and some patience, yellow polar fleece or a stretch twill holds its shape better than plain cotton. A basic kids' bomber pattern (I used an old Kwik Sew children's-wear book, but any similar pattern works) can be adapted with black ribbing at the cuffs and hem to get that moto-jacket look. No-sew. Choose a yellow windbreaker, and you've completed 95% of the Halloween costume. Hair Tape will finish the look without the difficulty of sewing. The actual instructions are this simple: sew strips of tape to create stripes on your jacket. This is best done in three days before Halloween.
Whatever you start with, a few details do most of the work:
● Patches. Felt cutouts and fabric paint, scattered across the chest and sleeves. They don't need to match anything specific; the jacket has a bit of a thrown-together band-jacket feel to it anyway.
● Black trim.A black ribbon measuring 1 inch on the collar, cuffs, and hem. Fabric tape holds it fine, no stitching required.
● A fake zipper. Thin strips of black felt with a line of silver fabric paint down the center, run down the front and along the pocket seams.

Step 2: The Spiked Shoulder
This is the detail people actually clock from across a room, and it's not hard.
A pocket of black felt can cover the seam and has an oval shape.
Use glue to attach four small cones (or buy craft foam cones that already have glue) down the spine of the oval.
To attach the oval to the left shoulder, use fabric tape or hand stitch a few times if you’re worried about it falling off for the night.

Step 3: Top and Shorts
Keep the base layer simple.
Top: A modest-looking long-sleeve or mock neck shirt. Add a thin choker ribbon with a thin black ribbon across the chest and two thin straps running up to the choker, and you have all the major components of the stage wear silhouette.

Step 4: The Purple Braid
Half the costume, honestly. Two ways to go about it.
If there's enough hair to work with, braid it and use purple hair chalk or temporary wax. It washes out, which matters if you don't want purple hair through the rest of the week.
If not, or if you'd rather not deal with the mess, a long pre-braided purple wig gets you the length and color in one shot, no waiting around for hair to grow.
Step 5: Accessories
A few small things finish it off: two or three layered chain necklaces, a little star or moon charm clipped to the jacket zipper, and boots if you've got them. Thrifted jacket plus craft supplies, you're realistically under $30-40 for the whole thing, and most of the assembly (patches, shoulder spike, trim) takes an afternoon once the jacket's in hand. Using fabric sewn together makes something more durable since it gets worn frequently. The extra length of time and cost on the fabric are worth it, knowing the final product will bring many years of use.
